The Drill Here Drill Now debate drives me crazy! I hear democrats cry that drilling will not even have effect for 5 to 7 years, despite the fact that the process can be streamlined to reduce that time.
But, even if it is 5 to 7 years before new domestic production can be brought online, what do you think Amercans will be doing in 5 to 7 years? We’ll still be driving our cars, of course. And using oil. And the price of gas will probably be even higher. So that dog won’t hunt, as the saying goes.
Even if future technology like electric cars were to become available tomorrow, the majority of Americans wouldn’t be able to buy them – we STILL will be driving our gas automobiles into the distant future. So, drilling here and drilling now makes sense so that we can reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
Drilling here and now should coincide with the development of new technology to reduce and eventually eliminate our need for oil completely. I think alternative energy is the way to go, but we have to be realistic about the current state of our country. We will have to be weened from oil rather than a cold-turkey termination.
The same people that argue that the oil speculators should be held accountable also should realize that the promise of domestic production and increased domestic volume would actually decrease speculation in the market and actually drive down the price of oil TODAY. So, domestic drilling is a short term solution, despite what is being decried by the democrats.
If we had opened up our shores for drilling five years ago, we may not have the problem we have now – let’s not make this mistake again and delay what we’ve already delayed too long!
